The following video can describe the issue better. Holding the iPhone 4 in your hands with your fingers touching the antenna seems to immediately and consistently send the bars plummeting.
UPDATE 1: When the phone is at 1 bar the person on the other end can’t hear me.
UPADTE 2: It seems when you BRIDGE THE ANTENNAS WITH YOUR FINGER/HAND ON THE LEFT side/bottom of the phone you will loose reception. Very not cool!
I don’t know if this can be fixed with a software update or if it’s a major design flaw…. A case or “bumper” will probably fix this but why should we HAVE to have an ugly case for the phone to work properly?
UPDATE 2: Finally, Apple’s official response to the problem. Unfortunately it’s either “don’t hold it like that,” or “use a case.” Those aren’t acceptable solutions.
